CTC Match - West Cornwall v Trevose
A fantastic result by our Cornwall team Championship (CTC) team in the semi-final at Perranporth against Trevose last Sunday, 14 February.
The morning foursomes showed how tight the contest was going to be. The first match saw West Cornwall team captain, Matt Richards partnering Dean Tulley take on former Welsh International Ben Westgate and county championship finalist Carl Burley. Westgate and Burley were 1 up through 16 but the West Cornwall pair won 17 to square the match and with a half on the last the match finished all square.
Two of the other matches, Jon Coleman & Phil Weaver (WCGC) against Nick Gammon & Jon Tremayne and West Cornwall juniors Bradley Barnes & Fin Rule against Steve Davies and Mark Oliver also also ended in a half. However the last foursomes match saw Alex Glasson and Seamus Stevens of West Cornwall overcome Guy Norris and Niall Hutton by the tightest of margins, 1up.
With the score standing at 2.5-1.5 the 9th man looked all important. Following a string of injuries, Graham Smith had been called on to play for West Cornwall, playing against Gary Hawkins of Trevose. This proved also to be a tight match with the players all square after 18, but with the match having to play to a finish it was Smith who prevailed with an excellent birdie on the 20th hole.
That left West Cornwall needing 3.5 points from the 8 afternoon singles. All matches again looked tight early on but Richards finished an excellent win in the top match against Westgate 1up, and in the second match Tulley overcame Burley 2&1. Gammon got a point back beating Coleman 1 up and Glasson halved with Davies to leave West Cornwall needing 1 point from the last 4 matches. There was not long to wait with Weaver beating Tremayne 3&2 to secure victory for West Cornwall. Stevens then beat Norris 3&1 and although Rule lost to Hutton 2&1, Barnes beat Oliver in the last match 3&2 to give West Cornwall a final victory score line of 8.75-4.
That gets us to the final against Perranporth who themselves had a convincing win against St Enodoc winning 10.25 - 2.5.

Despite the weather the Seniors have managed to complete two Competitions over the past fortnight. The first of these was their re-scheduled "Three Men & a Dog" event played on 4 February, and perhaps surprisingly, over 18 holes. 41 took part and limited to just their own choice of three clubs and a putter. Scoring generally proved difficult with the majority of entrants scoring 34 Stableford points or less. However two players did manage to score well, with the final result settled by the single point separating winner Mike Knowles (42 points) from Seniors Captain David Thomas (41 points).
Full Prize winners were: -
1st - Mike Knowles - 16 handicap - 42 points (with 3 clubs and a putter!!)
2nd - David Thomas - 23 handicap - 41 points
3rd - Chris Gray - 24 handicap - 34 points (after cb)
4th - Jeff Green - 11 handicap - 34 points
5th - David Yabsley - 25 handicap - 34 points

On 11 February the Seniors held their Annual Charity Stableford in aid of Cancer Research, a charity they have supported for a number of years. 35 Seniors played in the competition which, due to ground conditions, was restricted to 15 holes.
Prize winners were: -
1st - Raymond Pearce - 12 handicap - 32 points
2nd - John Weaver - 19 handicap - 31 points (after cb)
3rd - Brendan Frazer - 15 handicap - 31 points
Barrie Higgins won the sponsored prizes for longest drive on 14th and nearest the 13th pin in "2" shots.
26 handicapper Bill Bunn achieved Nearest the Pin on the 15th green to win his wife a Box of Chocolates for Valentine's Day.
The event concluded with a Charity raffle many numerous prizes donated by Seniors and other Club members. It took some time for John Simmons and David Thomas to work their way through all the prizes.
In all the event raised just over £360.00 for the Cancer Research Charity.
