West Cornwall Golf Club Seniors - A Close Fought Affair
A record field of 41 players for a Medal event competed for the Seniors Shield at West Cornwall on 3 March.
Scoring for the lead and the trophy proved a tight affair with three players tied with a nett 67 and had to be separated on countback over the last nine holes.
Following the required calculations, Jeff Green, Seniors Vice-Captain, playing off a handicap of 11, came out as effectively the Seniors Medal Champion.

2nd - Mike Jose (24) - Nett 67 (after c/b)
3rd - Phil Phaby (9) - Nett 67 (after c/b)
4th - Peter Gregory (22) - Nett 68
5th - Barrie Higgins (8) - Nett 69
Nearest the 15th Pin - Jeff Green - 0.92 metres.
There were just two players who managed a "2" on the day - Jeff Green and David Winks each winning £40.00 worth of golf balls.
The Section hold their Annual General Meeting on 10 March.
Club Captain Ian Hanley welcomed everybody to the clubs annual Junior Presentation Evening where our young stars are formally presented their trophies that they have won over the past year. Ian said that our Junior Section was the envy of Cornwall and congratulated everyone on such a tremendous year.
During 2015 The West Cornwall Juniors have captured the Brian Gripe Cup (scratch Knockout) defeating Falmouth 3-2 over 36 holes at The Point at Polzeath. They also won the Bolitho League beating St Austell in the final with team Captain Bradley Barnes lifting the trophy for West Cornwall for the first time since 1996. A Cup double never before achieved by the club.
In the Junior Maxam we lost out to Truro, however Bradley Barnes and Finn Rule did register the best nett score on the day helping our side secure the Nett Competition prize.
Individual successes include Harry Hall and Bradley Barnes representing Cornwall at the South West Counties at Weston-Super-Mare. Bradley and Tristan Barnes together with Finn Rule representing Cornwall at under 16 level in the Ben Enoch League. Bradley and Finn also represented the Duchy at under 18 and Tristan at under 14 level.
At The CGU County Junior Championship at Newquay, Finn Rule won the under 18 nett prize and followed this by winning the Autumn meeting 36 hole competition at Mullion.
Bradley Barnes won the overall County Order of Merit and was crowned the CGU County Junior Player of the year. Both Bradley and Finn have subsequently been selected for the county men's development squad.
Our Girls have also enjoyed a solid year winning several club competitions. As well as taking part in the victorious Bolitho League squad our girls made a strong showing at the Junior Girls County Championships. Emily Jenkin won the Stableford Cup, Kira Barnes the Under 15 Scratch Salver and Casey Olds won the Under 15 nett Salver. Together with those three, Hannah Body and Katie Jenkin are also in the County Girls Elite Coaching Programme.

President of the Cornwall Golf Union,
David Inch reiterated the thanks and said how highly regarded West Cornwall's Junior section was at county level. David said how seamlessly the Junior Boys integrated within the county at Senior level and hoped that the girls would also be able to do so in the future. David then presented
Casey Olds with the Stephen Tonks Trophy, which is awarded to the Junior Club Member of the year. Casey's outstanding personality and tremendous popularity amongst the junior section made her the unanimous choice for this award. Casey has also had an outstanding year on the course winning several trophies.
Retiring Junior Captain
Noah Badcock then congratulated everyone and thanked them for such a great year reiterating the success the section had had during the year, before handing his Captaincy over to
Bradley Barnes. Bradley then announced his vice Captain as
Casey Olds.
