West Cornwall & Tehidy Park Golf Clubs
Coast & Country - 30th April & 1st May 2014
Quickly becoming the biggest early season tournament, West Cornwall & Tehidy Park Golf Clubs hosted the Coast & Country with 83 teams of 3 taking part. The format sees two scores from three to count on a Stableford basis and the field is split between the two courses on both days.
Day 1 saw much better scoring at Tehidy Park than West Cornwall with home team of Ryan Curnow, Martin Trewhella & Ron Ignaczak posting an excellent 83 points. The battle for second place was tight with 3 teams managing 79 points but it was John Alton, Tom Crocker & Steve Churchill of Carlyon Bay who won through on countback with Andy Beazley (Truro), Jason Hampton (Stover) and Peter Simmons (Tehidy Park) pushed into 3rd place.
Meanwhile at West Cornwall the conditions were proving much harder to handle and the scoring was considerably lower. However, the team of Lee Medlen, Rob MacGregor and Chris Robbins from Tehidy Park and Boringdon Park managed a creditable 75 points to win the day by 2 points from Mark Hollis, Ed McDonald (both Tehidy Park) and Martin Edwards (Perranporth) who had 73. In 3rd place were Michael Rooke & Roger Gay from Saunton Sands who dragged pro shop assistant Matt Curnoe out with them as they were a player short. They finished with 72 points.
Although conditions on Day 2 improved scoring was still difficult. This time it was West Cornwall that produced the best score of the day with St Austell Captain, Gary Hooper together with Simon Harper and Alan Lund scoring 81 points. They were closely followed by the eclectic mix of Beazley, Hampton & Simmons on 78, with West Cornwall Captain, Antony Richards with Dave Perry and Kieron Day 3rd on 76 points.
Meanwhile at Tehidy Park the top score of the day was from David Roberts, Graham Sandford & Chris Baggott from Staddon Heights with 79 points. This was just 1 point clear of both Medlen, MacGregor & Robbins, and Tehidy Park Captain, Simon Gregor who played with Ryan Reed and Justin Barnard, both teams scoring 78 points.
In the overall result it was the consistency of Beazley, Hampton & Simmons who totalled 157 that gave them victory. 3 points behind on 154 were Mark Bicknell, Matt Gunn and Darragh Dunleavy who also has two steady scores, just missing out on the top 3 on each day. 3rd place went to Medlen, MacGregor and Robbins of Tehidy Park with 153, just beating Curnow, Trewhella & Ignaczak on countback.
