FootJoy Shoe Fitting Day
A very insightful day was had last Wednesday when Ben Thorne can down to West Cornwall to conduct some shoe fittings. I was amazed by the amount of players who are wearing the wrong size shoes (myself included). FootJoy say that up to 70% of golfers wear the wrong size shoes which was certainly backed up by our fittings on the day. Ben did 15 fittings on the day with only 12 of those 15 currently wearing the correct size shoes.
What is more amazing though is the performance losses that golfers sacrifice in their games from having those incorrectly sized shoes. I was as sceptical as most when hearing such claims, so we decided to check those claims out using our Trackman launch monitor out on the range.
Harry Hall our local international star had his shoes fitted, he currently wears size 12 shoes but was actually fitted into size 10.5, a size and a half smaller. Harry was equally sceptical, but after hitting numerous drives on the range in both pairs the results were astounding.
From the Trackman data we can see that although Harry's average Club speed only increased by 0.8 mph his average carry increased by 10.9 yards and his average total distance by 4.4 yards. This is even more astonishing as his average smash factor on these longer drives wasn't as good as with his old shoes suggesting that he actually didn't strike them as well, but his increased traction with the ground gained him that extra distance. His shot dispersion was also much tighter with the correct shoes.
After hitting balls in the correctly sized shoes and going back to his old shoes Harry said that he felt his feet were not stable enough and they didn't feel good. To quote Harry:
"I feel such an idiot, I spend my life working on trying to improve my game and I had neglected the importance of correctly sized shoes"
Harry's is now wearing my old shoes, which were his size (10.5 and medium width) as I'm now wearing a full size smaller (9.5 with Medium width).
FootJoy do 4 width fittings (Narrow, Medium, Wide, Extra Wide) as most golfers tend to buy bigger sizes to accommodate the width of their foot not realizing that wider shoes are available.
I have learned a lot by this and have the same measuring device in my shop as the one Ben had. I cannot promise as great an increase in performance as Harry gained, but it's certainly worth getting me to measure your feet before you invest in your next pair of shoes.

Bolitho Shield Finals
The defending Champions of West Cornwall were narrowly defeated in a close fought semi-final at Carlyon Bay on Sunday.
We played an in-form Truro side, who went on to beat Mullion in the afternoon final.
Well done to the whole squad who travelled in the day and many thanks to all of the junior squad who contributed their time and efforts in the league matches which gained us the play-off place.
