Seniors section

Hayle Cup & More

West Cornwall Seniors concluded their September events with the Hayle Cup 4BBB on the 29 September. With a field reduced by injuries and late holidays 32 players took part in a closely fought contest. Winning with 44 points were Vice-Captain Frank Curnow and his partner Mike W Richards who, like the rest of the field, were drawn together in the Secretary's special draw.

Prize Winners were:
1st - 44 points - Frank Curnow & Mike W Richards
2nd - 43 points - Rob Blakesley & Bennett Stevens
3rd - 41 points - David Shilson & Jon Baxter

Nearest the 15th Pin - Peter Gregory

With just one remaining friendly Match remaining to be played against St. Austell on 6 October, the Seniors will have concluded their Match programme for 2016. 26 of the scheduled 28 matches would have been played with West Cornwall enjoying a rare Away win at Newquay GC but suffering an equally rare loss at Home against Merlin GC.

The concluding round of the Seniors 2016 Golfer of the Year takes place on 13 October, and following Round 4 of this best of three round Stableford competition, the current leader is David Yabsley

The 4th round, played on the 8 September in testing conditions, was won by Robin Smith with 36 points. However Robin is not well placed to challenge for the title, but with 35 points in the 4th round both David Thomas and Henry Kagan are well placed.

Course news

A special visitor to West Cornwall

Our long established group of Green Keepers are used to dealing with all manner of unusual events in the day to day management of the course here at West Cornwall but last Sunday produced a circumstance more unusual than normal.

Early on Sunday morning our youngest Green keeper and newest recruit Gavin felt the need to ring his boss Course Manager Keith Kemp."What's the problem" enquired Keith of his young understudy "and what on earth is making that dreadful screaming noise"! Gavin responded with "it's a Seal Pup".

True enough a Seal Pup had mysteriously found its way onto the Golf Course and having navigated its way around several deep Bunkers had rolled onto it's back and become stuck in a hollow adjacent to the sixth Green.

Keith rushed to the course immediately to be confronted by a bemused young Green keeper and a particularly angry Seal Pup. Assessing the situation and fearing the loss of one or more fingers with every attempt to move the Pup, Keith decided to call the experts from the Maritime Animal Response Team who arrived on the scene very quickly.

They advised that the Pup was approximately 5 weeks old and in good health despite its ordeal. With expert and careful handling the Pup was transported back to the beach and gently released back into its natural environment.

An unusual circumstance and one that we thought might be of interest to members.

Greenkeepers news

Wildlife rescue aside, this week Keith and his team have been busy repairing the fringes of the greens where through constant use the grass has been taking somewhat of a beating over the summer season. It would be greatly appreciated if we could ask all golfers to help in the maintenance of the course and generally aid the recovery of these areas if when approaching the greens, (especially if using a trolley or buggy) to take a slightly wider approach. Which looking at the way some of our member's reach the greens shouldn't be too hard to do...

You will notice a number of areas being roped off as a result of trying to give the grass a chance to repair/recover out on the golf course. Although work like this is an all year round task, the majority does take place over the quiet times which unfortunately we are coming into now. Golf course maintenance isn't just the job of the green keeper and his staff, it's also the job of every golfer using the golf course - through the proper repair of pitch marks, divots and raking of bunkers if you visit them.

Please help West Cornwall Golf Club maintain its high standards and quality out on the golf course, now and in the future.
