Competition news

First of all this week I would like to pass on my congratulations to our CAW Cornwall Bowl team on defeating the 2016 Champions,Truro GC 4-1 at Tehidy on Sunday. Well done team!

Congratulations Lady Captain

The next port of call is to congratulate our Lady Captain Debbie Sedgeman for winning the Vice President's Cup for 2016. The VP Cup was first presented in 1929 and is the oldest ladies cup in the County, and to qualify you win through a 'match play' competition within your own club. Debbie had won through to the West Division in 2007 but that year lost in the final to the East Division winner.

The 2016 Final of the Vice Presidents' Handicap Cup between Debbie Sedgeman (15) West Cornwall, and Jacqueline Wheeler (17) Carlyon Bay, was played on a cold but sunny day at Truro on Thursday 13th October. It was a thrilling final, nail-biting to the end. Debbie had to give 2 shots, Jacqueline won the 1st and 8th to go 2up at the turn but Debbie fought back to win the 12th and 13th for the match to be on level terms.

Jacqueline returned to the fray to win 14 and 15 to go back to 2 up and was dormie 2 on the 17th tee. However, Debbie parred both the 17th and 18th to level the match, so the match continued down the 19th which was halved.

Finally Debbie closed the match on the 20th with a four.

The match was a very close encounter, played in a fine spirit and congratulations to both for reaching the final.

To reach the final with all matches played on a neutral course -

In the West Division Debbie defeated Rosemary Mitchell (St. Austell) at Perranporth, Danielle Price (Perranporth) at Tehidy and Rowena Lowson (Tehidy) at Mullion.

In the East Division Jacqueline had the better of Hana Dabrowski (Bude & North Cornwall), Fiona Lunt (St. Enodoc) and Erica Vierk (Lanhydrock).

Thought of the week

Great for the game

At a time when the game of golf is desperate for a wider audience, recent events will have gone a long way to helping its cause. From Justin Rose's Olympic gold to America's dominance in the Ryder Cup to last week's British Masters, things are certainly on the right track.

The British Masters was supported by Sky Sports and as such Sky were giving away thousands of free tickets prior to the event, ensuring that The Grove was full to capacity throughout. Once again the event was coupled with some innovative ideas designed to bring a fun factor to the week; and they nailed it!

Tuesday night saw the Hero Challenge take place under the floodlights with over 2,000 spectators transfixed by the one-hole knockout contest. The 18th hole was converted into a 156-yard par-3 for both professionals and celebrities to battle it out until there was one man standing. This was followed by the ISPS Handa Pressure Putt Challenge on Wednesday. Professionals teamed up with a celebrity and went head-to-head in knockout fashion as each player attempted to hole putts of increasing difficulty.

Not to take away from the main 72-hole competition from Thursday to Sunday, which was superbly won by Alex Noren, these new concepts were a huge success and will certainly bring some much-needed new faces to the game.
