Jason Broadway Tests the New Pro V1 & Pro V1x
The Choice is V or X
With the advent of the launch of the new Pro V1 and Pro V1x Titleist are recommending that players test both balls before deciding which ball to play.
Titleist and those clever scientist who work in R&D designing and producing these balls say that the Pro V1x is soft and the Pro V1 is softer. I found this to be the case in testing and I found a significant difference in the feel of the balls.
The Pro V1x actually feels a bit harder than many balls on the market but this feel does not relate to the spin that the ball produces. The Pro V1x spins more with the short irons and half wedge shots, approximately 450rpm more in fact (according to my data) so players looking for more stop on their wedge shots may want to consider trying the X.
With the rest of the set I found the performance of both balls remarkably similar. Contrary to Titleist's marketing I actually found the X to fly and launch slightly higher with a tad more spin than the regular ball. This further proves the necessity to test both balls before deciding on which one to play. The consistency of the data reported was remarkably similar throughout the test.

Generally my recommendations would be:
Slower swinging golfers who would like more distance (less than 200 yards) together with players searching for more stop on their approach shots and the very fastest longest hitters generally the Pro V1x performs the best. Golfers outside that spectrum i.e. average drives between 200 and 270 yards I generally recommend the normal Pro V1.
Having said this, there are no rules, its personal preference. It is a fact that either ball is the best Titleist ball for everyone. Titleist produce other excellent balls but generally this is a choice for players not willing to pay the high price of the Pro V1.
The one tip that players must do to maintain consistency is to always use the same type of ball when they play. Different balls react differently so in order to gain any consistency in your game it's vital to use the same ball each time.
I choose the Pro V1 ball, and will continue to do so after these tests, I personally am tempted by the Pro V1x because of the increased spin with the wedges but I still prefer the overall feel of the Pro V1.
