Jim Barnes Cups - Sunday 28th May 2017 (36 holes 4-ball better ball)
Jim Barnes
James Martin "Long Jim" Barnes
Born in Lelant, Jim Barnes spent his early years of his illustrious career on the links of West Cornwall Golf Club. During the years 1909 to 1925 he won almost every tournament in the United States including the U.S Open and the PGA Championships. He completed the big three by winning the Open in 1925. To get your name engraved onto The Jim Barnes Cups alongside the great man's name is an achievement desired by many.
The morning conditions were favourable and the scoring meant that everything was hanging in the balance for the afternoon round. Top scoring in the morning were Tony Watling & Ryan Ellis of West Cornwall with 46 points. Close behind them and also from West Cornwall were Ian Pleasants & Ryan Condon on 44 points with 4 other home pairings all on 43 points being, Jamie & Joel Cameron, Steve Taylor & Phil Sedgeman, Peter Darlington & Neil Hodding and Jon Coleman & Andrew Richards. There were another 18 pairs with 40 points or more and the best visiting score of the morning was achieved by Carl & Dale Band on 42.
The weather was not so kind in the afternoon with persistent rain causing some discomfort to the players. Unfortunately, Watling & Ellis were unable to keep up their morning performance, only managing 39 in the afternoon. There was however some excellent scoring with Andre Otto & Neil Fletcher managing 44 to total 85. Jamie & Joel Cameron managed 43 again to total 86 with Tom Newman & Ross Hutchings added 44 to their morning 42 to also finish on 86. It was a couple of experienced veterans though that pulled through; Darlington & Hodding managing an excellent 45 in the afternoon to score 88 and take the overall spoils.
