Harry Champion Flukin Irons - Saturday 16th August 2014

Harry Champion Flukin' Iron Cup: The late Harry Champion was one of the characters of Cornish golf, having first won the Cornwall County Championship over 60 years ago. As an outstanding player, he was often asked what club he played for a particular shot, with the answer always "Just a flukin' iron".

The Club set up a special competition in memory of Harry Champion's contribution to Cornish golf; it is played as a 4-ball better ball with a full member partner. Partners are drawn.

A great day was had by all . Great weather lead to great scores with Junior Captain James Scott presenting the Prizes alongside West Cornwall's Vice Captain Mr. Ian Hanley.

Winning with a magnificent score of 46 points were Rob Tempest (2 handicap) and Dan Richards (30 handicap).

1st - Rob Tempest & Dan Richards - 46 points
2nd - Geoff Murt & James Wirth - 43 points
3rd - Anneli Sweet & Joe Venn - 42 points
4th - Doug Blackmore & Ethan Tempest - 41 points

On Tuesday 12th August the ladies played for the Elizabeth Eddy trophy which was presented to the section in memory of Elizabeth who died of cancer at a young age. No prizes are given on this day, the entry money going to St Julia's Hospice. This year a cheque was dispatched for £104. The cup was won by Patricia Weaver with 35 points on a tricky windy day. Ann Eddy presented it on behalf of her son Peter, Elizabeth's husband.

Jon Clatworthy Gains 15 yards

"I will never buy a driver blind again" was the quote from Jon Clatworthy after a trackman session with a driver he bought "blind" online. The Driver was the latest TaylorMade SLDR which is a great driver, but Jon purchased the wrong specifications for himself.

Jon is a very good player and felt he knew what specification he would need. Today's drivers are very complex, and expert fitting is essential if the correct specification is to be achieved to gain the best improvement in your game.

Jon's costly mistake was losing him at least 15 yards in distance and more importantly robbing him of accuracy. Once fitted with the correct SLDR driver, Jon's accuracy, consistency and distance improved dramatically. Jon eventually purchased a Callaway driver which he preferred over the TaylorMade one. The lesson learned is that fitting is essential if you are going to maximise the improvement in your game.

Once again this week has flown past with plenty of different coaching sessions taking place, the ladies group sessions are continuing to be well supported with 12 ladies attending the last one which looked at Irons and Woods. I have organised a follow on course for the 8th September which will be a one day session which will allow us the opportunity to look at everything again, but in the convenience of a five hour session all in one day!

I have a couple of spaces left for my junior session on Friday the 22nd, so if anyone was thinking about attending now would be a good time to sign up before we reach the maximum number allowed. Click here to get in touch if you would like to get involved.

September looks like it will be just as busy as August with lots more going on. I have various group coaching sessions, several Get Into Golf groups starting up and a great promotion on individual lessons. Please take time to have a look at all the different groups and if anyone needs any advice on which one would be most suitable for them please do contact Matt Tucknott PGA Professional West Cornwall Golf Club on 07516 637816.

West Cornwall Juniors Represent Cornwall Boys

West Cornwall Golf Club's Juniors have been doing a great job this Summer representing not only England Boys team with Harry Hall, but also at County level with several of our younger players getting regular spots in the Cornwall Boys team. Bradley Barnes, Tristan Barnes, Fin Rule and Jordan Mustiano are all now regularly part of the under 16's/14's line up which, if they continue their improvement, will inevitably see them playing for the under 18's soon!

James Wirth's hard work has now resulted in him representing Cornwall in the under 18's and by all accounts played well in this months match against Devon up at Launceston Golf Club.

If any young players would like to know more about playing for Cornwall please contact Matt Tucknott who is the Director of Coaching for Cornwall County Juniors.

Likewise if anyone would like to get involved with this years Winter Golf Development Program please see the next article below and use the link on it or contact Matt Tucknott on 07516 637816 or follow on Twitter @golflessons4all.

2014/15 Cornwall Junior Coaching Programme

There are only 3 weeks left for any applications for the 2014/15 Cornwall Junior Coaching Programme (applications close on Sunday 31st August 2014).

2013/14 was the first year the Cornwall Golf Union, Cornwall Ladies Golf Association and the Cornwall Golf Partnership joined forces to create a new structure for junior coaching within the county. The Cornwall Junior Coaching programme has proved to be a great success and the 2014/15 programme will continue to improve and provide a first class programme for talented junior golfers in Cornwall.

The 2014/15 Cornwall Junior Coaching programme will be again headed up by Cornwall's Director of Junior Coaching and West Cornwall's PGA Professional Matthew Tucknott. This will ensure the program will provide a clear pathway for juniors to progress through from the Future's Academy to the Under 18's elite coaching.

This years programme will consist of 8 monthly coaching sessions starting in October and finishing in May (each session will last approximately 4 hours) and will cost £70 per junior.

The closing date for all junior applications is on Sunday 31st August. The juniors will be selected on a range of criteria including how many lessons they have, how often they practice, how they have performed in junior competitions over the last 6 months, how they perform in any upcoming competitions during the summer holidays, the amount of competitions they play in and any changes to their handicaps over the past 12 months.

There will be at least 60 places for boys and 30 places for girls so if you know any talented and dedicated junior golfers that would benefit from county junior coaching please fill in the application form.

If you could fill out the attached application form by clicking here and send it by e-mail (cornwallcdo@hotmail.co.uk) or by post to Simon Wood, 12 Clear View, Saltash, Cornwall PL12 6HB.
