Coast to Coast
Friday and Saturday saw 88 teams of 3 take to both West Cornwall and Mullion golf courses for the annual Coast to Coast tournament. Teams travelled from all over Cornwall and beyond to take part in this ever popular competition. With 2 scores to count on each hole and played as a Stableford, half the field spent the first day at Mullion and half at West Cornwall with a switch around for day 2. Day 1 was hard and fast at West Cornwall and as the greens dried out during the day it became even more of a challenge. However it was the home team of Ian Hodge, Phil Weaver and Nick Hatton who used their knowledge of the course to score 79 points. From Downes Crediton, Paul Edgcumbe, Tony Rowe and Matt Phillips scored 77 as did the team from Woodspring Golf Club in Bristol of Rob Fairclough, Paul Tomlinson & Paul Gibbs. The all Mullion team of Scott Paterson, Paul Greet and Jamie Greet stayed in contention with 76. Meanwhile at Mullion, the scoring was also difficult but the best score of the day was made by Paul & Lewis Jackson of Perranporth with Dave Tregidgo (Porthpean) who amassed 82 points. West Cornwall’s team of Rob Broadbridge, Giles Piper and Allan Hampshire scored 80 whilst Dean Tulley, Stepehn Pollard & Gary Wal managed 79, closely followed by Paul & Jason Gay (Carlyon Bay) and Matt Gunn (Truro) who scored 78. With some heavy rain before 9am at West Cornwall, the course became a little softer but not much. The early scoring was good with Broadbridge, Piper & Hampshire managing 79 to go with their first day 80. Jackson, Jackson & Tregidgo then stunned everyone with 90 points, which was surely going to win the competition when added to their first round 82. Neil Razzell, Robbie Ham & Colin Mathews from Perranporth managed 85 with Gay, Gay & Gunn scoring 84. Meanwhile at Mullion, Mike Wigley, Doug Pedrick & Ronnie Barr scored 80 points early on and Rod Handyside, Phil Sedgeman & Chris Sandow made the most have having all 3 players for 18 holes to score 79. The last 3 groups however saw excellent scoring with Ben Easterling, Lee Bushby & Jon Rowley scoring 82, the best of the day with Hodge Weaver & Hatton and Paterson, Greet & Greet both getting 80 points. However, as expected it was Jackson, Jackson & Tregidgo who with a total of 172 and the best score at each venue on each day who won the overall honours by a 10 point margin.
