Nicola Stroud wins Swansea Community Coach of the Year in the Swansea Sports Awards.
It's always nice to start with some good news, so a big well done to Nicola who has done fantastically well, and has been presented with an award for "community coach of the year" at the Swansea sports Awards. Nicola, who worked with me at West Cornwall during 2012, returned back to Wales when offered the position as the new Head PGA Golf Professional & Golf Operations Manager at The Gower Golf Club. Since taking her new position she has done fantastically well at her new club and won this prestigious award. Video footage of the nominees can be seen by clicking here.
Nicola won this prestigious award for:
Inclusive (disability) Golf in the Community:
Nicola introduced 250 children and young adults to golf. Some more unusual projects included indoor wheelchair golf, working with Macmillan helping cancer recovery patients and beach golf.
Community:
She took golf out into the community with fun events such as street golf, beach golf and sport in the city (she had a huge inflatable net and games set up in Swansea City Centre). Overall she coached 530 children, 100 adults and 60 kids in a disadvantaged area project, whilst working closely with the police.
Volunteer training in the community:
She also trained 42 adults and youngsters (16+ year olds) to be junior leaders in not just golf, but multi sports. They learned skills that enables them to volunteer in most sports providing fun, safe and engaging sessions.
The Harry Hall Golf Day
Saturday 17th May 2014
A fantastic day is planned for Saturday 17th May to raise some money to help Harry cover some of the expenses he will incur this playing season. Harry is an amazing talent and a real credit to West Cornwall Golf Club and deserves our support. Harry is playing in several International events this season and as you can imagine the costs of travel, entries and accommodation really mount up. His latest tournament schedule for this season is listed below so you can see the extent of his schedule.
The format for the day is:
- A 4 Person Team Scramble with Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive Prizes.
- 12 Noon Shotgun Start with an auction afterwards.
- The cost per team of 4 is £100 which includes a Pasty and a Pint
- A £10 extra donation is payable if you wish to nominate your chosen starting tee.
I have already had a fantastic response for entries, with provisional teams being penciled in, and we already have a few reserves. Experience tells me that this will no doubt change, and as its vital that we fill all of the team slots, please may I urge you to make sure you let me know all of your team names by the end of March, and full payment of the entry by the end of April. Teams that haven't paid by the end of April will be filled by those on the reserve lists. I'm really looking forward to a great day and supporting Harry as much as we can this coming season.
Cornwall U18s beat Devon U18
Devon v Cornwall Thurlestone GC Friday 21st February 2014
The Cornwall U18 team opened their season in style during the first friendly match of 2014 with a win over rivals Devon at Thurlestone GC. In the 12 player team format where the 10 best individual stableford scores count, the Cornish boys compiled a 255 points total to squeeze home by just two points against the Devon total of 253. This victory was even more remarkable when a slight oversight or over confident Cornwall team only took 10 players with them to the match. This meant all ten of our boys scores had to count towards the final total so the pressure really was on.
Pictured here is the triumphant Cornwall U18 team. Also pictured are P Linaker - CGU Junior President, P Church, A Mortimore and the CGU Director of Coaching and PGA Professional Matt Tucknott (West Cornwall)
With Cornwall averaging 25.5 points in treacherous conditions, with extreme wind and the occasional heavy rain and hail shower, the team of Connor Jenkins (Capt), Josh Chaplin, Jake Finn, Kieran Faulkner, Ryan House, Ben Pill, Jared Mortimore, Connor Davidson, Zak Omlo, Ben Browning played consistently well, albeit over handicap, which was to be expected in the conditions.
Whilst Devon's Jacob Tinsley achieved the highest individual score of the day on 31, Josh Chaplin (Mullion) and Zak Omlo (St Austell) were the top scorers for Cornwall with 28 points each, whilst Jake Finn (Truro) scored 27 and CGU Junior Captain Connor Jenkins (Bude) and Ben Browning (Falmouth) both added 26 points. The rest of the team contributed at a level better than their opponents and this saw Cornwall through to victory. Team Manager Peter Church said, 'It was pleasing to see such great commitment and endurance. Their individual performances have made selection for the Four Counties match really difficult, everyone has everything to play for to gain selection'. Junior President Phil Linaker said 'Well done especially to Matt Tucknott and the coaching team, with whose help the boys have developed a better attitude and approach to their games." Let's hope this new momentum continues through out 2014. Next competition the Cornwall Boys will be competing in is the 4-Counties Championships held here at West Cornwall Golf Club on Tuesday the 8-10th April. Please feel free to come along and support Cornwall's next generation of golfing superstars as they try to make the most of hosting this great event.
M.O.G. Test
Exciting New Development Product for 2014:
The Ministry of Golf test is an annual test for golfers to ensure they know the condition of their golf both from a practical & theoretical view point. Unlike an "MOT" it's not a case of "Pass or Fail", but more a comprehensive, useful review of the state of your golf, which can be used to ensure that in the future the player is using the correct equipment, thinking the right thoughts, and playing to their best possible ability.
The test lasts approximately 90-minutes, and includes a report showing where the recommendations should be made, and a plan of how best to make the improvements if needed. Tests can be carried out either here at West Cornwall Golf Club, or up at Hayle Driving Range if the weather is bad or out of daylight hours.
The MOG test covers the following aspects:
Player's equipment (condition of clubs, grips & correct fitting)
Player's playing & Practice habits/beliefs
Putting
Chipping
Pitching
Bunkers
Iron shots
Driving & fairway woods shots
Long term Development plan/goals
For further information or to book your MOG test call 01736 753177 or 07516 637816 or click here to get in touch with PGA Professional Matt Tucknott who's 15 years of expert coaching and development skills will ensure you are driving the ball forward in the correct direction this year. There will be limited availability for these unique sessions so please book your 90-minute appointment ASAP, and if taken in March will be available for only £39.95. (Payment needed at time of booking)
Remember we all test our cars yearly for safety and reliability, we really should all be doing the same for our Golf Games!
