Knockout Finals Day
West Cornwall Golf Club held its summer knockout finals day on Sunday, 14 September. With 2 competitors in more than 1 final, the Ladies Wybrow Cups Foursomes was played on Friday, 12 September. It was a close game being all square after 16 holes, but with putts holed on both the 17th and 18th greens, the match was won 2 up by Anne Uren and Margaret Eddy over Mandy Stevens and Lynne Bishop.
On the Sunday, the first match out was the men's Foursomes Cups between Mark Hughes and Ian Hodge up against Luke Stevens and Jason Hackett. It was another close game with Hackett and Stevens 1 up through 12, but despite efforts from Hodge and Hughes to fight back, Hackett and Stevens proved too strong winning 3&2.
This match was followed by the Hain Challenge Cup, a singles knockout for men under 18 handicap, which saw Vice-Captain, Ian Hanley playing Andy Postans. Both stuttered on the first, but it was Hanley who took first blood and never looked back, eventually winning 3&2.
The Halsted Bowl, a singles knockout pitted two juniors against each other in Jordan Musitano and Hannah Body. Musitano took a strong early lead going 6 up, but Body fought back to be 4 down after 9. However Musitano's experience of high level golf kept him in front with an ultimately comfortable win 6&5.
The Seniors final followed, pitting Phil Phaby against Brian Joy. Joy, having an eye problem with a stuck contact lens, never got his game going and struggled with Phaby giving very little away and eventually winning 8&6.
The Juniors singles, the WHC Thomas Match Play Cup followed, and again was a close match with Noah Badcock finding himself 1 down against Bradley Barnes after 12. Barnes continued to apply the pressure to take a 3-hole lead with 3 to play and closed the match on the 16th for a 3&2 victory.
Next came the Ladies singles, the Holman Cup featuring Judy Ryder and Margaret Eddy. Eddy was 3 up after 9-holes and even using all her experience, Ryder was still unable to come back and eventually lost 5&3.
The mixed foursomes, The Maureen Richards Memorial Trophy, was next with husband and wife team of John & Sarah Barnes taking on Keith Dennison & Mandy Stevens. All square after 7 holes it looked like going the distance but then the Barnes pairing went into overdrive winning 6 of the next 7 holes to gain a 6&4 victory.
The Banfield Stevens Tankards, the men's better ball event, had Ian Alford and Andrew Hitchens taking an early lead and being 2 up after 9 holes. However Dean Tulley and Sean O'Dwyer fought back to make it all square after 15. Alford and Hitchens dug deep though to manage to win 2 of the last 3 holes and finish 2 up winners.
The juniors better ball event, the Timothy Curnow Memorial Tankards was the final match of the day. This puts together a low and high handicap player from the junior section. Again it proved to be another tight affair with Tristan Barnes and Rhys Evans winning the 9th hole to take a 1 up lead over Finlay Rule and Katie Barnes. This remained tight throughout, coming down 18 Barnes and Evans were 1 up and despite an excellent putt from Jenkin, which was nearly holed, she and Rule could only manage a half to lose 1 down.
