West Cornwall's Matt Richards and Harry Hall help Cornwall win the English Men's County Finals - Sunday, 28 September 2014 Royal North Devon GC

Cornwall achieved their greatest ever golfing success yesterday when they claimed the title of English Men's County Champions after three days of gruelling competitive golf over the ancient links of Royal North Devon GC. The county won the title for the first time in its 113-year history. Cornwall's maiden victory means the title has been won by a south west county three times in the last four years following Wiltshire's back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012.

Amateur golf in the county is currently in a richly deserved strongest position ever and County President David Inch was delighted. He said,

'Winning the English County Finals is a magnificent achievement and after a lot of hard work, the team have done the county and themselves proud. I am honoured to be President and this has been an experience I and those associated with golf in Cornwall will never forget. We are firmly on the map and now we have to try and build on that.'

Autumn Festival Of Golf

Last week West Cornwall golf club hosted it ever popular Autumn Festival of Golf. Over three days there were various competitions held which not only tested our club members but also visitors alike. The format for the competitions are organised to encourage as many golfers as possible to participate and enjoy everything that the oldest course in Cornwall can throw at them. Fortunately the weather was great and with the course playing so true, the scores unsurprisingly started to rise. Please see below the winning scores for the festival.

Winter League start times

Please see attached the latest updated start times for this weekends' Winter League fixture. Could all competitors note that this year you have to sign up for each separate fixture once the sign up sheet is available. The next winter league fixture after this one is on the 18th October and we will be taking bookings for this fixture this Saturday in the pro-shop when you all come in and pay for this weeks competition.

Ladies Scramble - Tuesday, 30 September

Texas Scramble seems to be the popular playing format of choice at the moment at the golf club and without wanting to miss out the ladies competition this week also joined in with the trend. Although the Ladies section did decide to add a little something else to their competition by holding a "Best Dressed Team" title to be won on the day as well as the normal prizes.

1st prize - R Fox, P Weaver & S Currie - 56 points

The days might well be drawing in now, but there's still lots of time left this year to improve your golf, and as always there's a full menu of coaching events planned for this October.

So whether you are an expert player just wanting to brush up on your golf skills during the Winter months, or a relatively new player working on getting your handicap down so that you are in a different division next year, I'm sure I can help you achieve your goals.

Some of the sessions are aimed at new players, so if you know of someone who might well want to start golf for the first time please pass on the details of the group to them.

Please also note that during October you can use any credit you have in the Pro Shop to pay for your golf lessons. Likewise please also note that I am able to offer golf lessons up at Hayle driving range, so this does mean this Winter you have no excuses playing anything less than the best golf possible.
