Tour news

Walker Cup

There was great support by our members at Royal Liverpool Golf Club last weekend watching Harry Hall represent GB&I in the Walker Cup. Well over 50 members enjoyed watching the future stars of the game in an event that sees the best amateur golfers from GB&I take on their counterparts from the USA in a thrilling matchplay event. Royal Liverpool was the venue and it was Team GB&I who took a 7-5 lead into the final day. However, an 8-2 demolition in Sunday’s singles matches saw the USA team overturn the deficit for a 15.5 to 10.5 victory.

Harry won his first morning foursomes with world number 3 Connor Gough against Stewart Hagestad and Akshay Bhatis 2&1, but unfortunately lost the following days foursomes to the same pair playing again with Connor. Stewart Hagestad managed to beat Harry in the afternoon singles.

It was the first time since 2007 that an away side has picked up the trophy; a team that contained a few names you might recognise – Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson to name but a few.

We are all very proud of Harry and look forward to following him in his future career.

While this was going on our Ladies Gammon team were taking on Perranporth in the final of the Gammon Trophy at Trevose. Unfortunately for West Cornwall, the final score was 6-1 to Perranporth who have now won the trophy for the 4th straight year. A great effort by our team though in reaching the final and hopefully next year they can go one better and win the trophy. Well done ladies.

Solheim Cup this weekend

The biggest rivalry in women’s golf takes centre stage this weekend as Europe take on the USA at Gleneagles, Scotland. Having lost the last two editions of this biennial event, the Europeans – boosted by four English golfers in the team – are hoping they can upset the odds back on home soil. Keep an eye on your inbox next week as we recap what is sure to be a fascinating encounter.

Casey wins among Rules fiasco

First things first, congratulations to Paul Casey on his victory at the Porsche European Open over the weekend. This victory – his third in 18 months – sees the Englishman rise to just outside the top 10 in the World Rankings, but it was the Rules of Golf that threatened to take centre stage once again.

For once it wasn’t about slow play or dropping from knee height. Instead, Casey faced a possible two-shot penalty on Friday after videos showed his putt rolling over a moving insect on its way into the cup. Under Rule 11.2, Casey should have replaced his ball and taken his putt again if he was aware of the infringement but as he didn’t, a two-shot penalty should have been the result.

For once, common sense prevailed as under Rule 20.2, which states that we should ‘apply naked eye standard when using video evidence’, it was deemed there was no way Casey was to know there was an insect there. Surely, this is one of the weirdest scenarios this year?

Competition news

Ladies Autumn Meeting

Our Autumn Meeting was held on Tuesday 3rd September, a 27 hole competition, comprising a morning round 4BBB and in the afternoon a 9 hole Foursomes. Results were as follows:

1st - Mandy Dennison and Anneli Sweet (43+14=57).
2nd - Gill Cattran and Chris Matthews (40+14,=54).
3rd - Alison Gessey and Margaret Eddy (36+16=52).

Best morning round - Ros Fox and Donna Gibson (38).
Best afternoon round - Lynne Bishop and Edwina Thomas (16).

Ladies Monthly Medal and 9 Hole Stableford

On Tuesday 10th September we held our Monthly Medal and 9 Hole Stableford, which was played in very pleasant, sunny conditions. Results were as follows:

Division One:

1st place - Judy Ryder (Nett 68).
2nd place - Chris Matthews (Nett 74).

Division Two:

1st place - Jane Lewis (Nett 74).
2nd place - Mary Jones (Nett 77).

The 9 Hole Stableford was won by Sheryl Stevens (17 points).

Battle of the irons

Before we pit these two beauties against one another, have a think about how good your bad shots are? It's a bit of an oxymoron, but are they disastrous and leading to big scores or are they less penal and still go somewhere around the green?
