Greetings from Jason Broadway
West Cornwall Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

For many, The Masters signals the start of the golf season and we don't have long to wait. One of the things that intrigues me most about the whole week is some of the shots the professionals are faced with, and nine times out of ten they seem to pull them off.

Whether it's uphill or downhill lies, intimidating putts across treacherous greens or approach shots littered with card-wrecking danger, we are treated to a vast array of shots during Masters week. My instruction pages might not advise you how to play a low slinging draw off pine needles, but you will find some great tips and advice for all aspects of your game.

Have a browse, and for during those times when you can't get out onto the course to play, or hone your game on the range, take on board a few useful pointers. You might not find yourself teeing it up at Augusta next year, but I guarantee you'll find it useful for shaving a few shots off round here. So click here to take a look at the videos and tips I have for you.

M.O.G. Test.

Exciting New Development Product for 2014

The Ministry of Golf test is an annual test for golfers to ensure they know the condition of their golf, both from a practical & theoretical view point. Unlike an "MOT", it's not a case of "Pass or Fail", but more a comprehensive useful review of the state of your golf, which can be used to ensure that in the future the player is using the correct equipment, thinking the right thoughts, and playing to their best possible ability.

The test lasts approx 90-minutes, and includes a report showing where the recommendations should be made, and a plan of how best to make the improvements if needed. Tests can be carried out either at West Cornwall Golf Club, or up at Hayle Driving Range if the weather is bad or out of daylight hours. The MOG test covers the following aspects:

  • Player's equipment (condition of clubs, grips & correct fitting)
  • Player's playing & Practice habits/beliefs
  • Putting
  • Chipping
  • Pitching
  • Bunkers
  • Iron shots
  • Driving & fairway woods shots
  • Long term Development plan/goals

For further information, or to book your MOG test call 01736 753177 or 07516 637816 and speak to PGA Professional Matt Tucknott, who's 15 years of expert coaching and development skills will ensure you are driving the ball forward in the correct direction this year. There will be Limited availability for these unique sessions, so please book your 90-minute appointment ASAP, and if taken in March will be available for only £39.95 (Payment needed at time of booking).

Remember we all test our cars yearly for safety and reliability, we really should all be doing the same for our Golf Games!

A big thank you to everyone who was involved in the Open day we had on Sunday 16th March. A number of potential new members took the opportunity to play our fantastic links with some joining on the day. In the past years, these days have been incredibly successful with many of the guests returning in the weeks after the day to join our club. Hopefully this year will be no exception, and more and more golfers will want to join our great club. If you know of anyone who may be interested in trying golf, we are offering a great deal on starter lessons with 5 lessons for £25 together with Cornwall Golf Month.

The aim of the Cornwall Golf Month project is to make golf more accessible for all through offering FREE taster sessions, Get into Golf Open Days and structured group coaching at golf clubs, driving ranges and pitch and putts throughout Cornwall. Click here for more information.

Final Winter League 2014 Results after the 10 winter league events through the winter:

Played in great weather, the presentation for the winter league is preceded by a scramble competition which I am pleased to say featured myself in the winning team.

It's been a great winter league this season, and seemingly played in mostly good weather considering the atrocious weather we have experienced in the past few months. My congratulations go to all the winners, in particular Lee Bushby and Seamus Stevens for winning the Low handicap category, and Martin Oats and Mark Perry winning the High handicap.

Special thanks must go to Peter Rendell who has organised and run the Winter League superbly well since the 1970's. Peter has made the winter league incredibly successful over the years, and in my opinion one of the best competions we have at the club. The winter league mixes the low handicappers and high handicappers together and creates an opportunity for players to meet, socialise and play with golfers who they don't know. It's a great social and fun competition that hopefully will continue to be successful in the future, as Peter has sadly decided its time to hand over the running of the Winter League to someone else. Thanks very much Peter for all you've done in creating such a great competition, you've done it superbly well, and you will be a very tough act to follow.

The results of the scramble were as follows:

1st - Jason Broadway, Harry Hall, Dave Phillips, Steve Dodgson  - 52.2
2nd - Chris Sandow, Alistair Paterson, Ted rockey, Kevin Veal  - 53.3

Why playing with the right golf ball is essential

Playing with the wrong ball could be compromising your feel around the green and performance off the tee. It pays to consider what ball you play in relation to your ability.
