West Cornwall Seniors invite to the Ladies Mixed Greensome Competition
It was a blustery but beautifully sunny day on Thursday, 26 March when West Cornwall Seniors invited the Ladies to join them in a Mixed Greensome Competition. It was very well supported and a great way to get to know our fellow members.
32 players took part in very windy conditions with Seniors Captain - David Thomas partnering Ladies Captain - Edwina Thomas over the 18 holes played.
David was able to show Edwina his affinity with bunkers during the round and this did little to help their score along. At the conclusion of the event 4 pairs were tied on 36 points, but the pairing of Robin Smith and Anne Evans won by virtue of having 20 points on the last nine holes.
Four pairs came in with a good score of 36 but count back revealed the scores as follows:
1st - Ann Evans and Robin Smith
2nd - Pam Harvey and Henry Kagan
3rd - Alison Gessey and John Hosking
4th - Chris Marenah and Phil Thomas
Texas Scramble
Can you imagine a violent hail storm in a Texas Scramble golf competition! That's what happened at West Cornwall on Tuesday, 24 March when the lovely spring day conditions were interrupted with hail stones.
Playing 15 holes, the winners, with an excellent nett 50, were the team of Sheila Currie, Margaret Morris, and Yvonne Walker. They were followed by Mary Jones, Mandy Stevens, and Alison Gessey on a nett 53.3 and, in third place on 53.5, was the team of Jo Body, Rachel Perkin, and Chris Matthews.
Triumph for West Cornwall in the Daily Mail Foursomes Competition
Representing West Cornwall Golf Club for their first Daily Mail Foursomes Competition was Lynne Bishop and Gill Cattran. They played against Sally Markham and Helen Carson of Mullion Golf Club on Monday, 16 March at West Cornwall and won 5-3. The next round is home drawn against Cape Cornwall.
We wish them luck.
Captains Charity Donation to Prostate Cancer
Outgoing Captain Antony Richards presented Meirion Grimshaw, a representative from the Prostate Cancer Charity, a cheque for £1297.55 from funds raised from his Captain's Charity. Meirion was delighted with the donation and explained that Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer in men, with over 40,000 men diagnosed each year, that's about 1 in 8 men who will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. He said that they wouldn't be able to provide the very latest in technology or bring ground-breaking prostate cancer treatments to the area without donations.
Well done to all that helped Antony raise this fund for Prostate Cancer.
March on Seniors
West Cornwall Seniors competed in four events during March commencing on 5 March with the Seniors Shield, the only Medal round in their annual Calendar. For the second year running the Competition was won by 24 handicapper Terry England who had rather too many shots for 2nd place Barry Higgins, a 7 handicapper. Full results for the Seniors Shield were:-
1st - Terry England - Nett 69
2nd - Barrie Higgins - Nett 69 (after c/b)
3rd - Phil Thomas - Nett 71
4th - Simon Pengelly - Nett 71 (after c/b)
5th - David Tregenza - Nett 71 (after c/b)
On 12 March, 12 three man teams completed for the Seniors Rosebowl, an event which allows increased scoring with a "Bonus Ball", known by many as the "Yellow Peril". Loss of the "Yellow Peril" limits the ability of a Team to double points, particularly if it is lost early in the round. In what were quite damp conditions at times, the winners were the Team of Barrie Higgins, Tony Falkingham and Jim Glover who amassed a score of 104 Stableford points.
The 1st Round of the Golfer of the Year Stableford Series was played on 19 March. To be played over 5 rounds during 2015, it was experienced 14 handicapper Ted Chance who came out on top with a magnificent 44 Stableford points, 5 points clear of Robin Smith in 2nd place. Ted's handicap has now been reduced back to 12 where it was a year ago. Full results were:-
1st - Ted Chance (14) - 44 points
2nd - Robin Smith (14) - 39 points
3rd - Jim Glover (24) - 38 points
4th - Ray Pearce (12) - 38 points (after c/b)
5th - Brendan Frazer (15) - 37 points
Nearest the Pin on 15th - Ray Pearce - 686mm
49 players took part.
Cornwall Golf's county coaching program nearing its final sessions
The current county golf coaching program heads into its last month of this seasons sessions with once again huge improvements being made by the juniors in all the different squads. Started back in September juniors from across the county have had a great opportunity to develop their golfing skills whilst enjoying coaching and playing golf at some of Cornwall's best golf clubs. With over 96 juniors, 14 different golf clubs and over 10 golf professionals this has been a great year in terms of making the academy truly county wide.
The last boys under 18's group coaching took place last Sunday at St Mellion with Matt Tucknott PGA leading the session as normal with Jason Avery PGA resident professional acting as the support coach. The group had tough conditions to contend with but made the most of the wonderful facilities on offer at St Mellion as they battled through wind and rain to complete their series of sessions before they head off to their first championships of the year.
If anyone would like details of the next county academy program starting in September 2015 please do contact Matt Tucknott, who is the Director of junior coaching for Cornwall Golf, or Simon Wood the county golf development officer.
2 West Cornwall Golf Club Juniors get selected to play for Cornwall Boys
Harry Hall leads the Cornwall Boys team next week as they head off to Weston Super Mare to defend their Four Counties Championships (Strokeplay) title that they won last year, and the individual title Harry won himself after an epic extra holes, marathon play off. Bradley Barnes also made the 9 man squad for the first time in his golfing career after putting in a lot of hard work in over the winter training program and posting a number of good scores in the events leading up to the selection day.
If you would like to go up to Weston-Super Mare Golf club next week and support the our West Cornwall golf club representatives and the other juniors from across Cornwall please do, I know your support will always be welcomed and appreciated.
The Strokeplay event starts the championships off on Wednesday the 8th in the morning followed by 3 matches of Matchplay in the afternoon and the following day, Thursday. If anyone would like more information about the championships please contact Matt Tucknott PGA who will be attending the event in his role as Head coach for Cornwall Juniors.
