West Cornwall Festival of Golf
Monday, 30 June - Saturday, 4 July
West Cornwall Golf Club held its annual summer festival of golf week with team events throughout the week and an individual senior's event on Thursday.
The first event saw 42 teams of 3 take part and with the course playing hard and fast it was a challenge for all of them. However, the visiting players from Tehidy, Carl & Dale Band together with Justin Harrington still managed 86 points to come out victorious. Close behind on 84 were home team, Simon Stevens, Martyn Harding and James Dagnall and another 2 further back were Mark Chamberlain, Ian Cowls and their guest David Chambers.
It was the visitors who took the honours in the mixed greensomes on Tuesday with Mr & Mrs Upperton, beating Mr & Mrs Oliver on count back after both teams carded 37 points. Home Club players then filled the next 2 prize placings with Margaret & Steve Morris finishing 3rd on 36, the same score as 4th place Gill & John Embley. In 5th place another team of visitors, Mr & Mrs Strout managed 35 points.
84 pairs took part in the better ball event on Wednesday and there was some strong scoring. However, winning the day with 42 points were Tony Bromley & Nick Hatton. They were closely followed, with second place on 41 going to Jordan Musitano & Ross Hutchings whilst in 3rd on the same score were Graham Johnson & Lew Evans. 3 pairs then carded 40 points, Brian Hosken & Roger Dugdale, Kevin Nankervis and Steve Murphy and visiting pair J Rowe & B Davies.
On Thursday, the senior's individual stableford is always a popular event and with a pasty and a pint half way round and a fabulous buffet afterwards, it is understandable.
The scoring was also excellent with new Member, David Yabsley in the first group out, scoring 41 points and being sure to get his handicap slashed, winning the competition. In second place was senior honorary secretary, Doug Blackmore on 40 whilst 3rd was Past Senior Captain, Simon Pengelly on 39. Peter Verran who holed his second shot on the nearest the pin in 2 par 4 13th, lead 3 players on 38, the other 2 being Ryzsard Zolkiewicz (RTZ) and John Hosking. The highest placed visitor was Richard Johnston from Carlyon Bay who finished 7th and also holed his second shot into the 13th. Another visitor, George Temby from the Point won the longest drive on 14th.
On Friday, tough conditions still didn't stop some excellent scoring. Youth lead the way in the form of Ross Hutchings, Tom Newman, Jordan Musitano & Noah Badcock with 88 points. Close behind on 86 were last group out, James Franklin, Ian Pleasants, Jamie Cameron and Rob Broadbridge on 86. Mark Chamberlain and Ian Cowls were again in the prizes accompanied by 2 visitors, M Patton & M Berks, scoring 85, whilst Simon Foster, Peter Ramsey, Neil Bevis and Roland Hardman edged into the prizes with 83.
The final event of the week, the scramble is always a favourite and 42 4-person teams took part. The early club house leaders from Carlyon Bay were Kevin Rowett, Eddie Fisher, Gavin Rowett and Jeremy Barnard with 51.8. This held until towards the very end when Antony Richards, Steve Turner, Neil Fletcher and Rob Blakesley managed to score 50.7 to win the event. 3rd place went to Brian Hosken, Malcolm Clatworthy, Charlie Evans and Richard Glanville on 53.
