West Cornwall Golf Club - Coast To Coast
The annual joint event, held by West Cornwall and Mullion golf clubs took place over 17th and 18th July. As opposed to the Open Championship the weather was kind on both days with the first day taking place at Mullion and the second at West Cornwall.
With 64 teams taking part, the first day at Mullion found the course looking and playing extremely nicely. An excellent score of 82 from Steve Vieira, Martin Gratton and Martin Cleve of Lanhydrock leading the way. Close behind on 81 were 3 teams that included the Mullion club Captain, Nigel Thwaites with Andrew London & Alastair Woodward. Also on 81 were West Cornwall teams of Jon & Chris Coleman with Joel Cameron and Vice-Captain, Paul Horsell with Andrew Hitchens and Keiron Day.
Another west Cornwall team, Gary Cox, Seamus Stevens and Phil Phaby, lay in 5th place on 80 points and there were a number of teams lying close behind them having scored in the late 70's.
The second day at West Cornwall also provided some good weather and the course conditions were excellent. Early leaders with 80 points were regular entrants, Dale Band, Ron Ignaczak and Ryan Curnow. This with their 79 from day 1 meant a lot of teams were going to have to do something special to beat them. With Seamus Stevens, Gary Cox and Phil Phaby scoring 78 to go with their score of 80 from day 1 and totalling 158, it looked as though only the first day 81's might catch the leaders with Vieira, Gratton and Cleve not showing their first round form for a 69. Neil Ryan from Perranporth golf club recorded a hole-in-one at the 15th at West Cornwall.
And so it proved to be with the Coleman brothers and Cameron shooting 80 to go with their 81 and total 161 for a 2 point winning margin.

Where do we even start?
Where does that Open rank for you in terms of excitement? The tournament started on a bit of a downer with the news Rory McIlroy had withdrawn because of injury, and when the high winds forced this great championship into an extra day, we were left wondering whether we'd get that Open drama we all crave. Well, we did - and then some.
True, Zach Johnson was probably not the winner many of us wanted, but he was a worthy champion and showed immense bottle, especially on the back nine, and real class in the play-off. What was so absorbing were the many subplots: Jordan Spieth's heroic effort to make it three Majors in a row on his quest for the Grand Slam, Marc Leishman's final-day charge following a rollercoaster year that nearly saw him quit the game after his wife was diagnosed with myopathy, and Sergio Garcia's pursuit for that elusive first Major. Oh yeah, the amateurs weren't bad either…
The 144th Open Championship has provided enough talking points for the 19th hole for a good several months, that's for sure. Many of you will have been impressed by some of the shots that were pulled off by the world's elite players. Whether it's the bump-and-run, hybrid chip or punched 5-iron that you'd like to add to your locker, come and see us or click here. We're here to help.
Roll on Royal Troon.
