Knockout Finals
The West Cornwall Golf Club knockout finals usually take place on one day but due to the number of players in more than one final, they were in fact spread over the last week.
On Sunday 6th September the first final, being a Junior better ball competition for the Timothy Curnow Memorial Tankards, was played.
This competition draws a high and low handicap player together and saw Junior Captain, Noah Badcock and his partner Dan Richards (pictured here) defeat Hannah Body and Tegan Thomas 2&1. The Tankards were presented by Mr and Mrs Curnow.
The Seniors Knockout was played on Tuesday 8th September with last year's winner Phil Phaby retaining his title by defeating Dave Perry, again with a score of 2&1.
The next 3 finals were played on Saturday 12th September with the first match of the day being the Ladies better ball competition, the Whybrow Cups. This was a very tight match, which was eventually won on the 3rd play-off hole by Antoinette Richards and Emily Jenkin thus pipping Colleen McIntosh & Margaret Eddy.
Later that day, The Maureen Richards Memorial Trophy, a mixed foursomes event, was played for. This pitted Sue Barlow and Bob Andrew against two of the Club juniors, Casey Olds & James Wirth. It was the juniors who came out on top with a 4&3 victory.
The last final played on Saturday was the Hain Challenge Cup with Phil Phaby playing in his second final against Luke Stevens and it was Phaby (pictured below) who won his second knockout of the year with another 2&1 win having lead from the 4th hole.
Onto Sunday and matches started at 8.30a.m. with Jason Hackett and Luke Stevens, in his second final playing against Tom Ruhrmund and Andy Postans (pictured above). This was a tight affair being all square after 11 holes but then Postans & Ruhrmund found their putting length and pulled away for a comfortable 4&2 win.
The second junior final, the W H C Thomas Singles event pitted 2 of the junior girls against each other with Hannah Body overcoming Emily Jenkin, playing in her second final, 4&3.
The first match of the afternoon was the Halsted Bowl, an individual knockout contested between junior Captain Noah Badcock in his second final, and Andy Postans playing his second final of the day. It looked like Noah was cruising at 4 up after 11 holes but Andy then staged a fight back to square the match on 17 only for Noah to then make a solid par down the 18th to win 1up.
The second match out was the Banfield Stevens Tankards, a better ball event which saw Phaby in his third final, partnering Duncan MacLennan against junior James Wirth having to play on his own as his partner, Willie Roberts, had been unable to make the day. With this massive disadvantage, James battled bravely early on but eventually couldn't keep it up, succumbing to a 7&5 defeat.
The final match was the Ladies section Holman Cup contested between Sue Barlow in her second final having played on Saturday and Hannah Body, like Andy Postans, playing her second final of the day. However it was the youth that came through with Hannah (pictured here) winning 5&4.
